  What are the "Days of Elijah?" 

When will the Prophet of Fire return?

Why don't we see other Prophets of God calling down fire?

These are just some of the questions I'll attempt to answer for you here.  And please be sure to read the closing segment!

The FIERY ANOINTING (Mantle) that rested on Elijah was prophecied to return for The End Time Harvest (Mal 4:5). 

First off, lets look at how the Scriptures reveal how it rested on John the Baptist who preached Repentance of Sin without excuse or pardon! 

The angel said of John the Baptist:  Luke 1:¹³But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. ¹⁴And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. ¹⁵For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. ¹⁶And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. ¹⁷And he shall go before him IN THE SPIRIT AND POWER OF ELIAS, [WHY?] to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to MAKE READY A PEOPLE prepared for the Lord.  ...Zacharias later prophecied of both Jesus and John: ⁶⁷And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, ⁶⁸Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, ⁶⁹And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; ...⁷⁶And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord TO PREPARE his ways; ⁷⁷TO GIVE KNOWLEDGE OF SALVATION unto his people by the remission of their sins, ⁷⁸Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, ⁷⁹TO GIVE LIGHT to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, TO GUIDE OUR FEET into the way of peace.

These 4 TO's define the PURPOSE AND POWER of this special spirit and powerful mantle.  John fullfilled his father's prophecy as well as Isaiah's prophecy (Isa 40:3-4) AS HE PREACHED REPENTANCE:  

Mt 3:¹In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, ²And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ³For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. ⁴And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. (also found in Luke 3:2-4)

Notice this Scriptural descriptions of Elijah:

II Kings 1:⁸And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.

Many interpret this Scripture as describing his Elijah's Mantle rather than his person.  Historians declare that Zacharius literally put the Mantle of Elijah on John the Baptist and he went into the wilderness and entered his ministry.  The mantle is said to have been found on Elisha's bones [II K 13:20-21] when the man was raised from the dead and was  preserved from then on in the temple, as probably Elisha's bones placed in a more secure sepulcher!  ;)

The Holy Spirit 'RESTED ON/UPON' the Prophets of old and was described most beautifully in His great descent upon Jesus after John baptized Him in the river Jordan.  Oftentimes, great Power and Anointing of the Presence of the Holy Spirit on the prophet was tangibly retained in inanamate objects (EX: Moses staff, Aaron's rod, Elijah's Mantle, and later in the NT in Paul's handkerchiefs).  Not to discount in anyway that John was indeed 'full of the Holy Ghost' even from the womb (above Lu 1:15). 

Personally, I believe that Elijah's mantle was  most affected and tangibly changed on a molecular level when he wrapped it about his face and stood before the HOLINESS OF GOD'S PRESENCE at Mt. Horeb (I K 19).  It was doubly AFFECTED by the HOLY PRESENCE OF GOD in II K 2 when the Lord whisk him from this earth into the Chariot of Fire! 

Additionally, the mantle (cloak) was representation of the Person, their personality, their influence, even their name.  In covenant rituals of those days, men exchanged their cloaks and rings as well as mixing their blood and other symbolisms to reflect the binding relationship of their exchange/covenant relationship.  (We find this practice is still very evident today with regards to gangs, memberships, and such reflecting LIKE "Colors".)

John the Baptist understood his Ministry and the prophetic fulfillment of his ministry spoken of Isaiah, but he did not fully make the connection between himself and Elias (Elijah):  

John 1:¹⁹And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? ²⁰And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. ²¹And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. ²²Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? ²³He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. ²⁴And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? ²⁶John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; ²⁷He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

Jesus did understand and spoke very certainly of John and his ministry being that of the Elias (Elijah):

"There was no greater prophet than John the Baptist" though "he did no miracles!" (Lu 7:28; Jn 10:41), and in Matt 11:⁷And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? ⁸But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. ⁹But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.(see Isa 40:3-4) ¹¹Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹²And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. ¹³For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. ¹⁴And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. ¹⁵He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

It was NOT literal FIRE (Miraculous Signs/Wonders) that Elijah performed that identified John the Baptist as being of the same spirit of Elijah!   As John did "No Miracles!"

However - John the Baptist did indeed prophecy of an Holy Fire! 

Matt 3:¹¹I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

I close this segment regarding John the Baptist with Christ own very honorable Word:

John 5:³²There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. ³³Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. ³⁴But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. ³⁵He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. ³⁶But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. ³⁷And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. ³⁸And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. ³⁹Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. ⁴⁰And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. ⁴¹I receive not honour from men. ⁴²But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. ⁴³I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

JOHN DID BURN!!! 

AS HE BORE WITNESS OF THE TRUTH - JESUS CHRIST!!!

These are the Days of Elijah!!!

Jesus was ALSO identified as being of the spirit and power of Elias (Elijah):

Matt 16:¹³When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? ¹⁴And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

Why?

Because Jesus preached Repentance of sin (Mt 4:17), he was Anointed (Lu 4:18-19), as well as did many miracles, thusly he possessed and reflected the same spirit and powerful anointing (Mantle: Personality and Influence of) of Elijah and John the Baptist, BUT ULTIMATELY THE HOLY SPIRIT!!! This is who they did not realize they were seeing on all of them!   (Christ himself is the Anointed One!  Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one [I Jn 5:6-9; Mt 28:19) and if you have seen Christ Jesus then you have seen the Father  [John 14-17]:

Mt 4: ¹⁷From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Now Jesus reflected this same "Spirit" (Anointing/Power, Mantle, etc.) of Elijah that his own disciples provoked Jesus to Call down Fire like Elijah when the Samaritans rejected him

Luke 9:⁵⁴And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? ⁵⁵But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.* ⁵⁶For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

*Christ is not condemning the works of God's expressed during Elijah's ministry, rather that they were judging and condemning to death these offenders - which is of the spirit of death - satan.  Only God, the Father judges the hearts of man, as we are permitted to judge the deeds of the sinner, but not the sinner. (Mt 7:1-5)

If you are drawn to the Miraculous Works of Elijah - look beyond the obvious - and realize the use the Anointing for which it was/is granted:

James 5:¹²But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. ¹³Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. ¹⁴Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: ¹⁵And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. ¹⁶Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. ¹⁷Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. ¹⁸And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. ¹⁹Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; ²⁰Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

7 Keys Elements to the Ministry (Mantle/Anointing that rested on) of Elijah:

Fasted, Prayed and Interceded

Preached Repentance (Especially Idols/False Religions & Worship sins, things put before God)

Spiritual Warfare (over Regions and False Prophets)

Miracles, Signs and Wonders (Elijah operated primarily in all the Power Gifts (Miracles, Faith, Healing), he had a special gift of Signs/Wonders with relation to the Elements (Wind, Fire and Rain).

Prophetic Office (Especially regarding impartations of anointing, mandates from God and gifting; sometimes via the laying on of his mantle as reflected twice in Elisha's case.)

School of the Prophets (Teaching and mentoring, in addition to the above mentioned Prophetic Office)

Pronouncing Blessings (Provisional, posterity and promotion) and Cursings

(Elijah's Ministry is focused in I King 17 - II K 2, and references through the Scriptures)

Elijah left the earth in the whirlwind of a Chariot of Fire and he will indeed RETURN to the Earth in Spirit and Power!  Notice what He will be doing:

Rev 11:³ And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. ⁴These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. ⁵And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. ⁶These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. ⁷And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. ⁸And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. ⁹And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. ¹⁰And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. ¹¹And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. ¹²And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

If you want to truly walk in the FIERY ANOINTING OF ELIJAH - you MUST BE A WITNESS, AND BE PREPARED TO DIE FOR THE SAVING WORK OF JESUS CHRIST, as did ALL OF THE ABOVE!!!

Jesus affirms this and John's prophecy (see Matt 3:11)and the fulfillment shortly followed in Acts 2:4:

Acts 1:³To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: ⁴And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. ⁵For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.  ⁶When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? ⁷And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. ⁸But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. ⁹And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight....2^:1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. ²And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. ³And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of FIRE, and it sat upon each of them. ⁴And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Jezebel sought the life of Elijah AND ELIJAH HAD THE GOOD SENSE TO GET OUT OF DODGE!!!  (See I Kings 19) Many scholars and preachers have viewed his retreat as a depression, even one of demonic influence such as suicide.  But I beg to differ - she would have killed him, as she did Naboth (see I Kings 21)l in the following days.  ALWAYS REALIZE WHERE THERE IS A SPIRIT OF JEZEBEL THERE IS ALSO A SPIRIT OF AHAB!!!  She desires to kill ALL the MEN OF GOD!   God sent an angel to restore Elijah's human strength so he could reach the SAFETY of the Mountain of God (Horeb is the same mountain God met with Abraham and Moses).  God not only sustained him physically, but protected him and THEN HE VISITED HIM AND SPOKE PLAINLY TO HIM giving him his next marching orders.  Yes - God consoled Elijah and his concern for his safety of the wicked Jezebel and her power in the earth and the demonic forces of that region as well.  Elijah like any 'man of like passions' cried out for God to take his life before being turned over to the likes of HER and be tortured to death!  Imagine the torment sent to weaken Elijah's steadfast Faith!  Elijah was dealing with, in the real sense, the fear of the adversary and his powers in the earth as that he'd certainly put a mark on his head and made him a real enemy after just executing 400 of his pagan priests!!!   (As with any battle or war-zone situation, this type of fear is the kind that recognizes your foe and there is a time/place when to retreat, to regroup, and prepare for another attack.) Elijah knew  well the Power of walking in the moment of a powerful anointing, and I'm sure he felt as do ministers even of this day the feeling of when that anointing for a particular work lifts, as in without GOD's anointed covering he knew he was a dead man!  He knew to regain spiritual strength came only through withdrawing to Pray!  And do take note that Elijah had his day when Elisha (Elijah's protege - with the DOUBLE ANOINTING mind you) prophecied her gruesome death and it came to pass!

Allow me to say a bit more with regard to Jezebel, as I not only establish her intent was to kill Elijah FOR REAL and due merit (as in again, Elijah had the good sense to DUCK!), but I want again to take you forward to the time to prove the intent of her spirit (demonic of course) is out for one thing, and that is to have the HEADS OF GOD'S PROPHETS FOR HER TROPHIES!!

Matt 14:¹At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, ²And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. ³For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife. ⁴For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her [John rebuked the sin]. ⁵And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. ⁶But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. ⁷Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. [This is the spirit of Ahab, he didn't offer her up to half the kingdom as the kings customary offering to theirs wives even, he offered her WHATEVER and submitted all his authority over to her!  duh.] ⁸And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger. [This is the spirit of Jezebel at work.]  ⁹And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. ¹⁰And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. ¹¹And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother [this is the spirit of Jezebel!]. ¹²And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
